FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 16, 1997
On July 4, 1997 Texas citizens will convene a constitutional convention at the Original Irion County Courthouse in Sherwood to write a new Texas constitution. This constitutional convention will be the first one since 1836 organized by citizens without control or under the direction of any government. The constitutional convention will also be the first ever convened under the authority of Article 1, Section 2 of the 1876 Texas Constitution. When the draft is completed, it will then be presented to Texas voters for approval.
Texas citizens interested in participating as delegates to the convention need only complete a simple delegate qualification form which verifies that the delegate: (1) is or will be 21 years or older prior to July 4, 1997; has resided on the soil of Texas for not less than six months prior to July 4, 1997 and (3) has the signatures of two other citizens meeting these requirements, authorizing the delegate to represent them at the convention.
"This is by far the most inclusive constitutional convention there has ever been," Texas Constitutional Convention Coordinating Committee (TxCCCC) moderator Wesley W. Burnett of Post emphasizes. Delegate qualification forms must be submitted to the chairman of the TxCCCC delegate qualification subcommittee no later than June 24, 1997.
"We are emphasizing lawful and peaceful process for changing government," Burnett adds, "and we believe that citizens, through rational and reasoned debate, will produce a constitution that will light up the world for those who wish to live in peace and harmony without government interference in their lives."
The impetus for holding a citizens' constitutional convention has been building since late last fall throughout Texas, and is spurred by concerns over the loss of individual liberties, the lack of security of ownership of property and the failure of government to ensure justice and redress of grievances through common law.
Those citizens interested in serving as delegates may call (806) 788-2750 for instructions; from the handset of a fax machine, call (703) 736-1655 and enter the numbers 6 7 6 when requested for the document number or on the Internet go to web site: www.rtmag.com/info.html.
The convention will open at 10 a.m. with ceremonies, followed by an old fashioned Independence Day barbecue on the grounds at the Original Irion County Courthouse. Business of the convention is scheduled to begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. with the election of a convention secretary and chairman.
